There’s a Blessing Associated with Giving
Chapter 10 of the book of Acts it emphasizes the word “Alms” meaning giving. This chapter speaks of the centurion Cornelius. Verse 2 described him this way, “a devout man, and one that fear God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, ….” Three times alms is mentioned in this chapter, all referring to what Cornelius did in supporting the people. Verses 2 is mentioned above, vs. 4, “…. Thine alms are come up for a memorial….” and vs. 31, “…. Thine alms are had in remembrance ….”
Cambridge and Webster dictionary define alms as, money, food or other material goods given or donated to people living in poverty (the poor). There’s a blessing associated with giving. “Whosoever hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dweleth the love of God in him,” 1 John 3:17? Saints of God, our giving and good works should be inevitable as Christians. We don’t give because we want to be blessed but we are blessed because we gave.
Psalm 112:9, “…. He hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour.” Because of Cornelius’ giving, God blessed him with a visit from Peter. If that wasn’t enough, he and his household was filled with the Holy Spirit and baptized in water in the name of the Lord, Acts 10:44-48. Beloved, there’s a blessing associated with giving.
God Bless.
