The Excellence of God’s Name
I am in total shock at times when I hear how the Lord’s name is being used and the people who use His name. Exodus 20:7, “thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain ….”
The name of the Lord has become a slang; used in the midst of curse words and used with no significant meaning behind it. Many of us use the Lord’s name casually, lightly and carelessly. The level of reverence we give the Name that is above every other Name is something we truly need to consider.
David said of the name of the Lord in Psalm 8:1, “O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! Who hast set thy glory above the heavens.” The Person who holds this name ordains strength through the mouth of babes and sucklings, so as to still the enemy and the avenger, vs 2. The name that ordained the moon and the stars and is mindful of men and visits them, vs. 3 &4.
The excellence of God’s name is actually seen in creation. It shows His power, His perfection and His sovereignty. The excellency of God portrays God’s character and His ability to do even the unexpected. When we call the Name of God we must realize and believe that He “is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think….”, Ephesians 3:20. But do we?
I pray as we continue to lift up the Name of the Lord, we will realize everything that’s wrapped up in this name. Also, that we have access to it, access to God’s excellence.
