Let me get straight into the differences, Intercession is a step up from prayer. Intercession is praying God's heart into a specific situation or standing in the gap on behalf of persons or regions who are in need of mercy, grace, deliverance, revival or breakthrough.
Ephesians 6:18, NIV: "And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people." ... Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere."
The dictionarys' definition of intercession is; The act petition, or entreaty in favor of another.
Therefore Intercession is bigger and more robust targeting larger objectives and praying on behalf of others.
In a corporate prayer setting years ago at my local church during a 21 days fasting and prayer, I have personally seen individuals without the intercessory gift operating through the anointing of the Holy Spirit in deep intercession.
2 Corinthians 1:11
"you are also joining in helping us through your prayers, so that thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf for the favor bestowed on us through the prayers of many".
On occasions and in a similar way as individuals are not in the office of prophets but prophesy with the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Similarly Individuals outside the office of intercession can also operate and intercede through the impulse and steering of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:26 "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans".
Timothy 2:1
"First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men".
Our Lord Jesus also interceded in John chapter 17 this prayer of Jesus Christ was addressed to His Father, placed in context before His betrayal and crucifixion. Methodist theologian Joseph Benson calls this prayer "Our Lord’s Intercessory Prayer", because "it is considered as a pattern of the intercession he is now making in heaven for his bride the church".
The New King James Version divides this chapter into three sections:
Verses 1-5: Jesus Prays for Himself
Verses 6-19: Jesus intercede for His Disciples
Verses 20-26: Jesus intercede for All Believers.
The dictionarys' definition of prayer is; A solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed to God.
So prayer tends to be more personal or on an individual level.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
Prayer is to our spirit-man what food is to our bodies. Prayer is the quintessential tool for the believer. With prayer the flesh decrease and the spirit increases. With regular prayers individual's spiritual self development improves and grows, therefore it is of utmost importance all saints develop prayer as a lifestyle.
Personally the following video have motivated me.
May the Intercessors and prayer warriors arise to the God given assignments and calling in these end times.
