Swearing & Taking God’s Name In Vain (part 2)
Do not fall into sin by swearing, cursing, taking an oath or using God's name in vain. The
scripture says “Do not bring shame on the name of your God by using it to swear falsely. I am
the LORD.” Leviticus 19:12.
During the sermon on the mount Jesus expounded and elaborated on the seriousness of taking
God's name in vain, swearing and taking an oath. Jesus includes God's throne (Heaven), the
earth (God's creation) Jerusalem (city of great king's) and your head.
"You have heard that it was said to our people long ago, ‘Don’t break your promises, but keep
the promises you make to the Lord.’ But I tell you, never swear an oath. Don’t swear an oath
using the name of heaven, because heaven is God’s throne. Don’t swear an oath using the
name of the earth, because the earth belongs to God. Don’t swear an oath using the name of
Jerusalem, because that is the city of the great King. Don’t even swear by your own head,
because you cannot make one hair on your head become white or black. Say only yes if you
mean yes, and no if you mean no. If you say more than yes or no, it is from the Evil One.”
Watch your mouth!
In Ephesians 4:29-30 the Bible says “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your
mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may
benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed
for the day of redemption.” I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every
idle word you speak. The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you.”
Control your tongue and think before you talk!
Proverbs 18:21 “The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the
consequences."
If the fear of God is in your heart and mind then you certainly would not dare to swear or use
God's name carelessly.
Let Us Pray for forgiveness heavenly Father, Lord God, Saviour and Sovereign King, we are so
sorry our hearts and consciences burn with guilt forgive us oh God. We have spoken and used
your name in vain often by swearing, have mercy upon us! We have sinned! Out of our mouths
and with our tongues we have blasphemed your glorious Name We apologize for doing this, it is
wrong and we are so sorry! Help us to control our emotions. May we fear and respect your
Sovereign Name.
Now my friends let the name of our Lord God only be on our lips for praise, worship and
adoration!
See you next week! Next week's blog will be on 'The Spirit of fear"
