...And Man became a Living Soul.
God is tri-part, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. We are made in his image and thus we are a tri-part being, mind, body and soul.
In the beginning, Adam's soul body and spirit were united and synchronised together as one but after the fall the sinful nature controlled the soul through the fleshly desires.
" For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me."
(Romans 7:15-20)
In the above verses, the apostle Paul expressed the strong will of the flesh to control and yield to temptation.
Now it is the spirit that is controlling the soul since birth.
"Behold, I was shapened in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me." (Psalms 51-5)
So the spirit controls what we think, do and feel. However since Jesus Christ Crucifixion and the deliverance of mankind through Christ redemptive work on the cross, we have received the Holy Spirit which regenerate and does a renewable work through Jesus's blood. This has changed the narrative of condemnation for humanity.
"For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross."
(Ephesians 2:14-16).
Therefore we have the necessary tools given to us to resist sinful fleshly desires.
"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." (Romans 8:1)
"So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. (Galatians 5:16)
From birth we are controlled by the human or worldly spirit. When we accept Christ, the Holy Spirit takes over the control of the soul.
This is what it means to walk in the spirit.
