Scoffers and Mockers by Marcel and Jacqueline Bruff

Scoffers and Mockers

In today's world there are many people who mock and scoff at traditional biblical beliefs, maybe you have a family member or friend who scoffs at you and your beliefs in Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

A scoffer is a person who jeers or mocks or treats something with contempt, scoffers are also, mocker, disbeliever, tempter, flouter and jeerer.

Scoffer” is the name of the arrogant, haughty man who acts with arrogant pride. Proverbs 21:24

Few months ago I encountered a person who ridiculed the return of Christ and expressed anger from his heart. It is easy to find many scoffers today online in cyberspace.

"Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation." 2 Peter 3:3-4

The Bible tells us, Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers, but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. Psalms 1.:1-2

Based on God’s word, and the wisdom provided, we must be very careful with a scoffer. We shouldn’t seek their counsel.

If you find yourself in a difficult situation with a scoffer, and it may take a while to identify them as such, the best advice is to inform yourself with the Word of God, heed the truth, seek wise counsel, and pray. Pray for wisdom, pray for the difficult person, that their heart will be softened to the gospel, and they will see their sinful ways, repent, and turn from that path.

"But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. They said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.” These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.

But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit." Jude 17-20

If you’re in the heat of verbal battle with a scoffer, and have been wounded by them, or unable to defend your beliefs take heart, for God has promised He will never leave you nor forsake you and His mercies are new every morning. Seek Him, seek help, and as much as it depends on you – seek to live peaceably and remember to repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.

A scoffer seeks wisdom in vanity, but knowledge is easy for a man of understanding. Proverbs 14:6
