Progressive Christianity was birthed out of the Liberal Christianity of the modern era, which was rooted in enlightenment thinking. As such, Progressive Christianity is a "post-liberal movement" within Christianity
The Center for Progressive Christianity was founded in 1996 by a retired Episcopal priest, James Rowe Adams.
Progressive Christianity comes with diversity of beliefs that fall under that designation all lifestyles are accepted and welcome, examples pro-choice, trans-gender and LGBTQ+.
Progressives are often nondenominational churches with a network of affiliated congregations, informal groups, and individuals.
How can we know and see progressive Christians? What are the signs of this counterfeit, "wolves in sheep's clothing"? Below are eight signs a church is promoting progressivism:
1). In Progressive churches, personal experiences, feelings, and opinions tend to be valued above traditional biblical truth.
2). Foundational Christian doctrines are open for re-interpretation.
3). There is a lowered view of the Bible.
4). The word love has become a catch-all term for everything non-confrontative and affirming immoral practices and behaviours.
5). In a progressive church It is not our job to talk to anyone about sin, it's our job to just love them.
6). The church's historic position on sexuality is archaic and needs to be updated within a modern framework.
7). The Gospel message shifts from sin and redemption to social justice and liberalism.
8). The idea of a literal hell is offensive to non-Christians and needs to be re-interpreted.
The bible is clear on instructions and foundational teachings and warns against compromising, adding or changing God's inerrent words. Below are five Bible verses of confirmation and reminder.
1). Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world." (1 John 4:1)
2). For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine and accurate instruction [that challenges them with God’s truth] but wanting to have their ears tickled [with something pleasing], they will accumulate for themselves [many] teachers [one after another, chosen] to satisfy their own desires and to support the errors they hold.
(2 Timothy 4:3)
3). The works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
(Galatians 5:19-21)
4). Jesus spoke about hell a real place see (Matthew 13:41-42)
5). But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.(2 Timothy 3:1-5)
Progressive Christianity compromises the original holy teaching of biblical principles and practices.
Historically, Christians have viewed the Bible as the Word of God and authoritative for our lives, this can never change as the almighty God is unchangeable so are his words.
Progressive Christianity is bent on casting doubt and undermining the foundational principles of God’s holy Word.
I pray for discernment, the ability to judge well. I pray for wisdom to stand up against progressivism within any church. I pray for knowledge and understanding to identify progressive Christianity and to be firm against it without compromise or fear.
