Profitable/Unprofitable by Minister Owen Mitchell

Philemon 11 states, “which in time past was unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and me.” Paul writing to his fellow-laborer in the Lord Philemon.

Philemon was a wealthy member of the Church in Colosse, which was in his home. Philemon had slaves and Onesimus was one of his slaves that stole from him, ran away and ended up in Rome where he met Paul. The themes of the Book Philemon are Forgiveness and Reconciliation but in verse 11 it speaks of “Profitable and Unprofitable.”

The question I pose to us today is, are we profitable or unprofitable to the ministry of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ? Onesimus was once unprofitable meaning useless and even injurious because he wronged his master by stealing from him. After meeting Paul, salvation was introduced and received by him, which led repentance. Onesimus now became profitable to the extent of Paul vowing for him. Ironically, the name Onesimus means profitable, a name that became evident in his walk.

Saints, they are many among us in the Church that are unprofitable, they are there to steal, cause strife and division. They are placed strategically to suck and drain everything we have and then run away unto the next victim. I pray for a spirit of discernment to come upon us so as to recognize them but I pray more-so that we will possess the Spirit of Onesimus, the Spirit of profitability in Jesus name, Amen.

God Bless.

Yours in Christ
