New wine in old wine skins by Marcel & Jacqueline Bruff

New wine in old wineskins!

is a metaphor Jesus used to illustrate the incompatibility between old traditions and new ideas. He said:

"No one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins." (Luke 5:37-38)

Let me elaborate and expound on the concept of "new wine in old wineskins."

In the biblical context, wine was a valuable commodity, and wineskins were made from animal hides, like goatskin or sheepskin. New wine, freshly fermented, was still bubbling and expanding, while old wineskins were stiff and inflexible.

When new wine was poured into old wineskins, the pressure from the expanding wine would cause the old skins to burst, wasting the wine and rendering the skins useless. Note

Jesus used this analogy to illustrate the limitations of trying to fit new ideas, perspectives, or spiritual practices into old, rigid structures or mindsets. Just as old wineskins couldn't contain new wine, old ways of thinking couldn't accommodate the fresh insights and understanding He was offering.

The new wine represents the truth of God, while the old wine represents the traditions of the culture that we have been born into.

In modern terms, this phrase cautions against:

- Trying to force innovation into outdated systems

- Imposing new ideas on rigid, inflexible structures

- Expecting fresh perspectives to thrive in stale environments

Instead, it encourages us to:

- Embrace adaptability and openness

- Create space for new ideas to flourish

- Be willing to let go of old, limiting mindsets

By recognizing the incompatibility between old and new, we can foster an environment where fresh thinking and growth can thrive, just like new wine in new wineskins!

In essence, Jesus was saying that trying to fit new ideas or perspectives into old, rigid structures or mindsets will lead to damage and waste. Instead, new ideas require a fresh and adaptable approach, like new wineskins.

I must add as the body of Christ we can use Modern-day tools that are applicable in advancing the kingdom of God in the here and now! I've list two basic methods below.

Technology and Digital Transformation

The rapid pace of technological change demands adaptability. Stay curious, learn, and embrace new tools and approaches to remain relevant in applying the Gospel.

Leadership and Management Effective leaders recognize the need for adaptability. Foster a culture of innovation, empowering the church, and lead with a growth mindset.

By applying the principle of "new wine in new wineskins," we can cultivate a mindset that embraces change, innovation, and growth, leading to personal and collective progress in various aspects of life.
