JESUS OUR SAVIOR AND SALVATION.
“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth” (Genesis 1:27).
God created man and God explains His will for man on the earth so that they would have dominion. "Dominion" in Hebrew means to rule or to have power. God intended for man to rule and to have full authority over everything on the planet, as well as, have the responsibility to care for the earth. Our presence is to represent God in the world, to care for His creation.
Unfortunately the fall of man from innocence to disobedience, resulted in a separation from God.
In the beginning, Adam's soul, body and spirit were united, synchronized together as one. However, after the fall the sinful nature controlled the soul through the fleshly desires.
" For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me" (Romans 7:15-20).
In the above verses, the apostle Paul expressed the strong will of the flesh to be in control and to yield to temptation.
Now it is the sinful nature that has controlled man since birth.
"Behold, I was shaped in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me." (Psalms 51-5)
So, we are controlled by the sinful nature and this controls what we think, do and feel. However, since Jesus Christ's Crucifixion there came the deliverance of mankind through Christ's redemptive work on the cross and we have received the Holy Spirit which regenerates and does renewable work through Jesus's blood. This has changed the narrative of condemnation for humanity.
"For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross."
(Ephesians 2:14-16).
Therefore we have the necessary tools given to us to resist sinful fleshly desires.
"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." (Romans 8:1)
"So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. (Galatians 5:16)
Since the fall all humans from birth are controlled by the sin nature. The Psalmist King David said, " I was born in sin and shaped in iniquity.
However, According to the New Testament, Jesus is the second Adam, or "Last Adam," because he came to earth from heaven to regain paradise for all who believe. Jesus had to take on the human form of Adam so that he could redeem us from the curse of sin. Jesus succeeded where Adam failed as a representative of God's authority on earth.
When we accept Christ, the Holy Spirit takes over the control of the soul.
This is what it means to walk in the spirit.
