Great Friday
Good Friday, Holy Friday or Great Friday are the names used to describe this day in history. Terrible Friday is also used because of the gruesome way our Jesus was crucified. It is so ironic though, that the word great is associated with Jesus’ death at Calvary.
The word great is synonymously used when an experience surpasses good. This historic day is great because of the event it led to, the resurrection of our King. If there wasn’t a death, there could not be a resurrection. Hallelujah! A death no sinful man could have died to atone for our sins, only the spotless Lamb of God. Sadly, many in our society do not believe all that is said and written about this day.
Think on these words written by Isaiah in his book, Chapter 53:5, “but He was wounded for our transgressions He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him ….” Verse 7-9 say, “He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, …. He was brought as a Lamb to the slaughter …. He was taken from prison and from judgement: …. He was cut off out of the land of the living …. And He made His grave with the wicked ….” This is what Jesus went through on this ‘Great Friday’.
I met a young man and he had a chain around his neck, that had a cross with Jesus on it. I struck up a conversation with him so I could say to him, Jesus is no longer on the cross. If there was no resurrection, we would not have a Great Friday.
God Bless.
