Effective intercession comes from being led by the Holy Spirit

Good morning dearly beloved friends

I pray God will release mantles of intercession upon us as we pray for many people.

Intercession is really standing in the gap for others, a pleading a cause for someone else. In intercession one must be led at all times by the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:26/27

26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession [g]for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God

Below is an adaptation to make this clearer:

Prayer often begins with us, but intercession always begins with the Holy Spirit. It is He who tells the intercessor to pray this or that. It is He, the Holy Spirit who gives the terms and conditions of the intercession. This is what abiding is – often the Holy Spirit asks the intercessor to meet some practical obligation to prove the depth of the intercession. He may ask the intercessor to fast, to give, to change one’s attitude to become more Christ like etc. Then, as the intercessor follows the will of the Holy Spirit, He prays through the believer with groans that cannot be uttered (Romans 8:26).

When the Holy Spirit lays an intercession on a believer, that person is committed to the intercession – to pray it daily, hourly and in every minute until it is answered. I don’t mean having a prayer time every minute, but living out the intercession in one’s life – it is always on one’s heart (1 Thessalonians 5:17). It is His intercession and burden being prayed through His vessel.

Amen (here ends the adaptation)

We really have to be led of the Lord in how we pray as I pointed out to my friend recently and she was surprised to see that there are times when God says do not even pray for these people.

Let me show you the examples:

Jeremiah 7:16 - 19

16 “Therefore do not pray for this people, nor lift up a cry or prayer for them, nor make intercession to Me; for I will not hear you. 17 Do you not see what they do in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18 The children gather wood, the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead dough, to make cakes for the queen of heaven; and they pour out drink offerings to other gods, that they may provoke Me to anger. 19 Do they provoke Me to anger?” says the Lord. “Do they not provoke themselves, to the shame of their own faces

Jeremiah 11:14

14 “So do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer for them; for I will not hear them in the time that they cry out to Me because of their trouble.

There is one instance though where God relented because Moses petitioned:

Exodus 32:11 - 14

11 Then Moses pleaded with [d]the Lord his God, and said: “Lord, why does Your wrath burn hot against Your people whom You have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12 Why should the Egyptians speak, and say, ‘He brought them out to harm them, to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from Your fierce wrath, and relent from this harm to Your people. 13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants, to whom You swore by Your own self, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven; and all this land that I have spoken of I give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’ ” 14 So the Lord relented from the harm which He said He would do to His people.

Abbah Father

Empower us to pray and intercede everday, we know that this is how we can make a big difference. Lead us and guide us in all. May we not pray "how we feel" but pray and intercede being led by your Spirit.

Amen and amen
