Discernment in Deceptive Times.

"Discernment is not simply a matter of telling right from wrong; it is also recognizing what is biblical, appropriate, and wise in a given situation." - John MacArthur

In today's world, misinformation abound, therefore making discernment crucial for Christians. Jesus warned, "For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect" (Matthew 24:24, NIV).

The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing

A shepherd noticed a wolf dressing as a sheep, trying to infiltrate the flock. The wolf's appearance and behavior mimicked the sheep, but its eyes revealed its true nature. The shepherd, discerning the deception, protected his flock.

Just as the shepherd recognized the wolf's disguise, we must discern deception in our lives. Appearances can be deceiving; we must look beyond surface-level truth, as Proverbs 4:7 advises, "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding" (KJV).

Types of Discernment

1. Spiritual Discernment: Recognizing God's voice and will (1 Corinthians 2:14).

2. Mental Discernment: Critical thinking and analytical reasoning (Proverbs 1:7).

3. Emotional Discernment: Understanding emotions and motivations (Psalm 139:23-24).

4. Natural Discernment: Observing physical reality (Matthew 16:3).

We can Identify Deception by:

1. Verifying information through reputable sources (1 Thessalonians 5:21).

2. Being cautious of emotional manipulation (2 Corinthians 11:3).

3. Watching for inconsistencies and contradictions (Matthew 7:15-20).

4. Seeking wise counsel (Proverbs 11:14).

5. Praying for spiritual discernment (James 1:5).

6. Testing all things; holding fast to what is good" (1 Thessalonians 5:21, NKJV).

"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God" (1 John 4:1, NKJV).

Stay vigilant, dear believers, and cultivate discernment to navigate these deceptive times. Remember, "For the Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God" (1 Corinthians 2:10, NIV).

Heavenly Father,

Grant us discernment to distinguish truth from deception. Protect us from false teachings and evil influences. Give us wisdom to recognize Your voice and will. Help us to test all things and hold fast to what is good.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
