Comforting Words by Owen Mitchell

Come see a man, this man name Jesus. Oh come see a man, both Lord and Christ. Well, He turns water into wine, gives the sight back to the blind. He’s the water and the bread, got power to raise the dead, Come see a man named Jesus Christ.

Comforting words, soothing, refreshing, reassuring, freeing, softening, invigorating, curing, tranquilizing, sustaining, inspiring and the list goes on. My daughter’s twin brothers, not my biological sons but sons nevertheless, would send me messages that gives me so much hope. Messages like, you’re an amazing man, a man after God’s own heart, you are a great dad and a man in the house of the Lord. These comforting words would come at times I least expect it.

Which leads me to this scripture in Romans 12:8 NIV, “if it is encouraging, let him encourage, ….” Comforting words are also known as encouraging words, making this a spiritual gift. Vs. 6 starts, “we have different gifts, according to the grace given to us, ….” Is this gift ever recognized in the body? With all the negative things being spoken and seen around us today, there should be visible manifestation of this gift.

The Greek word for encouragement is Parakaleo meaning to call alongside. This gift is used in the Church as a ministry and primarily focuses on counseling, mostly to the unbelievers. Parakaleo is also a term Jesus chose when He designated the Holy Spirit to come live in and minister through every Christian. Are you someone that encourages, do you find yourself offering comforting words from the Spirit? This gift is not to be taken simple.

God Bless.
