Cling (To Cleave)
While praying for marriages the Lord placed the word cling in my heart. After which He gave me Genesis 2:24, “therefore shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be of one flesh.” So it was from the inception of man and woman. Jesus then repeated and emphasized it in the new covenant, Matthew 19:5. Hence verse 6 of Matthew 19, “wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”
I quickly realized cleaving is another word used for clinging. In the Greek it also suggests passion. The Hebrew word cleave carries more depth than just passion. It refers to the closeness a wife and her husband are to have. They are to be fastened together, joined, staying put, adhere, embrace, linger, stuck together like glue; synonyms of clinging. In my culture we would say, to be tight like a vice grip.
“What? Know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? For two saith He, shall be one flesh,” 1 Corinthians 6:16. The fact is we become one. This unity the Bible speaks of is unprecedented, unique only to a married couple. Their unity encapsulates everything that a husband and wife will and can experience. Everything the very vows signifies. This clinging in the Bible, is unhinged by negative circumstances. This clinging can be only directed and orchestrated by God.
God Bless.
