Broken but Useable by Minister Owen Mitchell

Broken but Useable

A couple days ago, I listened to a Vietnam war veteran talk about his experiences. He spoke of his numerous deployments to war, in Afghanistan, Vietnam and various other countries. He was shot down while flying a fighter jet, lost his nose, his eye, his lip and other body parts.

As I listened to him speak of how broken he is, he echoed this sentiment, “You don’t quit if you are hurt”. With tears flowing down my face, I realized how much I could relate. “…. The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all,” Ecclesiastes 9:11. This is actually translated by theologians this way; there are times and seasons casual to men, but known by God, in which He alone give success.

The realization of how marred I was became even more evident. Broken but still useable. Sometimes the truth about my life steers me straight in the face, the job, family, friends, home, the Church. I say to us today, we may be broken but once we put our lives into God’s hand, we become useable. Jeremiah watched as the clay was marred in the potter’s hand, Jeremiah 18:4a. The potter worked the clay again on the wheel until he was satisfied with it at the end, 4b.

In verse 6b the Lord says, “…. as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand” …. We may have physical defects, mental struggles and spiritual battles but if we place ourselves in the Potter’s hand and He will make us useable.

God Bless.
