Poor in Spirit by Minister Owen Mitchell

Poor in Spirit

After seeing the multitude that followed Him, Jesus decided to go up into a mountain to teach them, Matthew 5:1-2. In verse 3, He started out by saying “Blessed is the poor in spirit….”. David in Psalm 51:17 puts it this way, “the sacrifices of God are a broken spirit….”

Being poor in spirit is a permanent disposition that comes with great reward. It is being in a state of poverty and want, total submission to God’s divine will. It’s a disposition of spiritual poverty and humility. It also exposes our weaknesses, ignorance, sinfulness, frailty and mortality. Are we poor in spirit? When we are poor in spirit, we become dependable on our Lord and Savior.

If we are rich in spirit, we don’t need a Savior. If we are rich, we don’t need a provider, we are not submissive or teachable. Our happiness and cheerfulness are not dependent on God, our contentment relies on our individual richness. This does not qualify us for Christianity, which is total dependency on Jesus Christ.

There’s a reward attached to being poor in spirit, “…. for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven,” Matthew 5:3b. This assurance allows us to be comforted, to inherit the earth, to be filled, to obtain mercy, to see God, to be called the children of God. “Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in Heaven.

God Bless.
