Are we Hearing and Listening to God
As I read the 7th chapter of the book of Zechariah, the thought of hearing from God became so real. Are you truly hearing and listening to God? Is the word of the Lord speaking to you through the Bible, a leader, a member of your congregation or the Holy Spirit? The first verse of chapter says, “and it came to pass in the fourth year of King Darius, that the word of the Lord came to Zechariah ….”
While meditating on these words, this question surfaced, why are Christians not more effective in their daily walk with God? Are we hearing and not listening or visa-versa? “For the word of the God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart,” Hebrew 4:12.
The relationship between hearing and listening became evident. According to a psychologist from Columbia University Medical Center, hearing is a passive intake of sound. Listening on the other hand, is the act of intentionally working to the sounds we hear. Zechariah spoke the words the Lord gave him, “but they refused to hearken ….”, verse 11. Are we hearing the word but not intentionally listening? Actions are developed through the Holy Spirit when we hear and listen.
When we neglect to hear and listen, God in-turn will not hear when we cry out to Him, and He will scatter us, verse 13-14.
God Bless.
