Agape – Is This Love Found in Marriages
“Let love and faithfulness never leave you: bind them around your neck, write them on the table of our heart. Then you will win favor and good name in sight of God and man,” Proverbs 3:3-4 (NIV).
Agape love is the foundation of Christianity, a strong, selfless and sacrificial love. God is love, God is agape, 1 John 4:7-8. God has created us in His image, so as we agape our Heavenly Father, we must agape all we come in contact with, Matthew 22:37-39. God has designed us to give agape and to receive agape. But is this agape love found in marriages?
To have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish until death do us part, agape love. This is the vow that is spoken over couples when tying the knot. The Bible tells us in 1 Peter 4:8, “…. Have fervent charity (love) …. For charity shall cover a multitude of sins.”
Some marriages are based on Storge, a love that exist between family members. Some on Phileo, the type that’s between people, friends. Others on Eros, the kind of love that’s passionate, sensual, affectionate and expressed physically when the two become one through marriage. But, all three are found in agape love when marriages are referenced. When we are married, we become a family, we are each other’s best friend and we become affectionate with each other. Are we showing agape in our marriages?
God Bless.
