A Little More Oil in my Lamp
A little more oil in my lamp keep it burning, a little more oil in my lamp I pray. This phrase takes me back to when I was growing up. It’s the first line of a song I heard regularly, a song I remember singing with joy. Back then, this song had no real meaning to me, but now it does.
Research has shown that this song was written based on the parable of the Ten Virgins, found in Matthew 25:1-13. This parable was considered as the most popular parable in the Middle Ages. The definition of this parable is; to maintain a Spirit filled relationship with God to keep sin out of your lives. Exodus 27:20, “and thou shalt command the children of Israel, that they bring thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamp to burn always.”
Is your lamp burning always? Oil signifies the Holy Spirit and the lamp is our physical temple. To burn always, speaks of having a constant possession and reflection of God, day and night, leaving no space for satan and his evil devices. It shows our comfort and reliability on our Lord. One theologian said, pure oil represents the graces (gifts) of the Spirit and without these graces, light cannot shine.
Today, we are closer to the returning of our Lord than yesterday. Today we are exposed to the wiles of the devil. I pray we constantly and continually ask God to pour more oil in our lamps and to renew a right Spirit in us.
God Bless.
